Hi, I am George Kuliner, and I am a first year M.S Quantitative Finance graduate student at Fordham University. I recently graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo (SUNY Geneseo) where I recieved a B.S in Applied Math and Economics. My interests are in data science and economics, especially in relation to making better financial decisions. Did you know that all statistical models are wrong? The trick is all about choosing the one that is the least wrong. I have been studying the mathematical rigor behind these models to understand how to choose the most appropriate one, how to implement them in a variety of programming languages, how to interpret the results, and how to present them to someone off the street.
My areas of interest in mathematics include statistics, optimization, and data analysis. My areas of interest in economics include pricing models, exchange rates, and econometrics. Feel free to look at the projects tab to see some of my work!
I fell in love with math during highschool where I took a discrete math elective which introduced me to the areas outside of what is normal grade school curriculum. This led to me choosing to study mathematics at university. I added the economics major later in my academic carrer at university after taking a few introductory economics classes. I became inerested and desired to know more as I learned the foundation of math in economics to prove and present underlying relationships within the economy. I have always been intrested in computers. I learned to code java in highschool, but put those skills on the back burner. Once I learned about its use in math and for data science, I got myself back into practice and always am learning something new. To help keep myself on track I joined the programming club at university. In 2019 myself and some members formed a team to compete in the ASA Data Fest at RIT. After about 40 hours of hard work over a weekend, we ended up taking runner up (second place equivalent) in the best insight of the data category. This has lead me to attending Fordham University Gabelli Graduate School of Business for the quantitative finance program. In this program I have grown my knowledge in finance, mathematics, and statistics in a professional enviroment.
Some of my most significant achievements achievements in my academic career are:
Outside of my academic and professional life I enjoy a number of hobbies, these include powerlifting, snowboarding, hiking, and camping. Powerlifting is my main hobby where one is scored on a maximum single repition in the squat, bench, and deadlift. I have only competed in one competition in 2018 where I revieved second place in my weightclass. I have my sights set on a competition later this year as I feel I am ready to compete again. Snowboarding is something I have done since I was in 6th grade. My first time out was an aweful experience where I went with my schools ski club. I thought I would be able to keep up with my friends who had skied for years. I ended up having to walk down the hill in shame as I could not make it more than 1 foot. After that, I practiced and stayed part of ski clubs at every school I have attended, including college, and consider myself at expert level. Hiking and camping is an activity that helps clear my mind. I have been to many national parks: Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Titon, Arches, Zion, Congaree, and Everglades. I have a soft spot for the Aderondacks, where I hope to complete the 46er challenge.
